Each character class has three 'levels' of proficiency/advancement. For instance, the default starting party for the game consists of a Squire, an Archer, a Priest, and a Mage. Each of these classes can be promoted twice, to the4 highest level of their class. re;

Squire --> Paladin --> Avenger

Priest --> Inquisitor --> Exorcist

Archer --> Marksman --> Stalker

Mage --> Enchanter --> Adept

The three other character classes also have three 'levels' of proficiency.

All promotions are achieved after completing a Promotion Quest given by the Lords and Ladies of Nimradur. When a Promotion Quest is completed by the party, the entire party gets 'credit' for the promotion; some will get an honorary 'title' (re; your archer can become an Honorary Adept - which will qualify him for the Aeros Mastery). As you gain access to the Lords and Ladies, they will offer you the first promotion.
